It's officially Autumn and I love it! Apple cider, the changing colors and occasional back yard fire warm my heart. My hair on the other hand is not so fond of the change in seasons. As the outdoor air cools and we crank up the heat inside our hair can become dry and damaged, here are 5 easy steps to winterize your hair and protect it against the winter season.
Get a Haircut
I know how it is to get attached to that long mermaid hair, so even if it’s just a dusting, trim those ends! Split ends do not go away on their own. In fact the longer you put off trimming your ends the more they will split, which then slows the growth of your hair.
Switch up your Shampoo and Conditioner
When the heat is on the air is dry and we need a shampoo and conditioner that is more nourishing for our hair strands. Seek out a line that contains oils, which will help to fight the frizz and static. It is also important to avoid products that contain ingredients such as parabens, SLS and alcohol, which will dry out your hair. My personal favorite cold weather line is Oi by Davines. The properties of this line are linked to Roucou Oil, originally from the Amazon, which has a a restructuring action on the hair.
Use a Humidifier
I don't know about you but I am a complete freeze baby and here in Ohio it gets soooo cold! We constantly have the heat cranked up and sometimes even have all 3 fireplaces running at once(my husbands not going to be thrilled when he sees this comment)! As nice and cozy as it feels to keep our home toasty, the moisture is then completely drained! The lack of moisture in the air wreaks havoc on our hair as well as our skin. Place a humidifier next to your bed each night to give your hair the moisture it needs to keep those luscious locks looking healthy!
Don’t Wash your Hair
Ok stick with me on this one, I don’t mean literally never wash your hair! But cut down as much as you can. If you are washing your hair everyday and wondering why your hair won’t grow and why it always feels brittle well ding ding ding...here’s your answer! I recommend working your way up to 3-4 days between washes! You may say I can’t do that I have to wash my hair everyday or it gets greasy! That is because the more you wash your hair the more your body has to overcompensate to create more oils! As you start to wash your hair less your body starts to get on the same page! In the mean time invest in a quality dry shampoo. I also suggest using an oil, such as oi oil, just through your ends to lock in the moisture.
Being a coffee until wine girl, this is something I constantly have to remind myself to do! Water actually makes up 25% of the weight of a single strand of hair! When you become dehydrated your body begins to go in protection mode and conserves water for vital organs(doesn’t our body know how vital our hair is?!). This can then lead to breakage, thinning and hair loss! Drink AT LEAST 8 cups of water a day(although I recommend more) to keep that mane healthy. So keep that water flowing, your hair AND skin will thank me later!
